Graphic Design

Pete Harrison
http://depthcore.com/artist/Pete+Harrison/

During his years in college he studied MediaLab Arts. After he graduated he put all of his works online, it was from there that he began to network with the community around him and several other designers. Through this came several magazine and books that talked about him. He has his own clothing company called "funkrush." Which kept him busy while he was also freelancing, one he had gotten enough exposure he decided to dedicate all his time to freelancing.

I really enjoyed looking through his work. He has a wide range of diversity in his work. The reason i chose this work was because I liked the fact that he didnt use the whole body of the model. At first glance you dont even realize that it is only her upper body. I thought that there was an interesting mix of photography, digital overlapping and graphic design all rolled into one.

Christopher Haines

I could not find much information on him so far..... will have to dig a bit more =(. He is an illustrator and designer from Perth, Australia. He has been in digital media since 2007 and has worked with many international clients. He mixes photography,3d and digital painting.

I really like this image because of the movement of the cars. To me this looks like it could be an ad for either a casino or a nightclub or even a music album. I wish that I could find out if this was a mix of photography and graphics. I feel like it could just be graphics, but judging by his other works, i think that he started with maybe 2 images and merged them together and then added some of his graphic flare to get to the final project.

Phil Dunne

He is an illustrator from Dublin, Ireland. After he graduated from National College of Art and Design in 2003 he worked on projects like children's books, private commissions, fashion illustration, and graphic design briefs. In 2005 he started to focus on his own style, a balance of traditional drawings and painting and photoshop. Over the past few years he has been featured in many different magazines such as ANTI, Belio, and Candy Magazine.

Out of the images that I saw this one popped out at me because of the fact that the character is creating something and we appear to be walking into the creation. I think that as an artist that it was interesting because you always want to see what others are working on or how they see the world and I feel like this allows us to see a glimpse of his world.

Justin Maller is an Australian freelance illustrator and art director based in Brooklyn, New York. He has been creating digital art for over ten years, and has produced professionally in both a private and studio based capacity for the last four. He has worked for a number of large world wide companies such as Nike, Verizon, and ESPN.

I really enjoyed looking through his professional client work and his personal works. I think that what I found to be most fascinating was the fact that at first glance his personal work still has that advertising quality. The above image is one of his fashion art works. To me it looks like he has thrown in a bit of his own imagination, maybe inspired by a different world. I feel like his works all take you to a new place, some of the Nike ones make me wonder if all the lines are what the runner sees or feels when they are getting a good work out.

Niklas Lundberg

Diftype is his alter-ego and portfolio that was established in 2006. It slowly began to grow into a full-time business that he is now running by himself  in UmeĆ„. Specialized in illustration & graphic design. At the side of running Diftype, he is also a part of the Depthcore Collective. ". I think once you reach a certain point with your work that your style can count as your own it’s important to maintain consistency with your own style. I always look at my style to be the composition itself, it leaves room to play with new elements and new techniques, but its how I put it together that makes it mine."

His work definitely has that individual aspect. After viewing his work I felt like he really spent the time to look at what was around him to draw inspiration for his art. He said that he use photography, architecture and music. I think that you can really see that in the above piece. To me it appears that he is looking at some construction and maybe listing to a song that had some harsh strong movements. Maybe some fast and slow change in tempos.

Valp's work has received considerable recognition, featuring in Digital Arts, Advanced Photoshop Magazine, Los Logos, Aktivist and Wizz inflight magazine, among others. He has a passion for his chosen vocation – and what began as a hobby 15 years ago has grown into a fulfilling career. The self-taught artist takes his inspiration from the visuals in the world around him - from static to motion, ancient to contemporary – and uses a combination of photography manipulation and hand-drawn effects to make his ideas a reality. He extensively researches every piece he is commissioned for to ensure the right effects are achieved and the correct message conveyed.

I really liked the above image out of his works presented online. This was from his personal works. I really like how he uses the fabric to move around the figure. What I found most interesting was the fact that the fabric appears to be coming from her, not just a garment but actually materializing from her head. If you look up by her ear you can see what I am talking about. Maybe it is also an extension of her hair... kinda gives it that Rapunzel look.

Tarik Mikou
http://www.unstage.com/2010/06/graphic-design-tarik-mikou/

Montreal-based artist, photographer and graphic designer. Much of Mikou’s work is commissioned for album covers, movie and event posters, and print work. "I’m really in love with his tribute to classic pop culture icons like Marilyn Monroe and Alfred Hitchcock."

I thought that this was an interesting body of work. It is a different twist on the marilyn monroe diptych by warhol. But instead of doing different prints of the same image in different colors he has worked with many different people. I think that it is an interesting concept to take old black and white photos and add some color to them.

Ari combines abstract shapes, type, and diverse colors palettes to create his illustrations and designs.

I really enhoyed looking through his work on line. I think it would be fasinating to see him work in person. I am not to great at adding text into my work so I think that anyone that can do it and make it look as good as he does has a good eye for design. I also think that he thinks about how to use the word and convey a mood. Like the abouve image, I think that by adding the lines you get a soulful feeling from the entire image.

Sara Blake

Her style is vivid and dream-like, mixing traditional illustration with digital techniques. She creates unique images defined by intermingling textures, vibrant colors laid over grays and blacks, and prominent negative space. "I think I definitely relate to illustration the most. I take pictures but I really don’t consider myself much of a photographer. I carry around my camera quite a bit because I shoot all my own textures to use in my digital pieces, so try to develop my camera skills when I can." She says that she likes to follow  James Jean’s Fables cover releases, she considers him to be one of her major influences. Other than that she is influenced by heavy line comic style, textures and aritecture found around NYC.

I really like her work, I think that she does a great job of taking her own hand drawn illustrations and adds color and textures through graphic design to take it to the next level. She claims that she is not a photographer but I think that you can see that there is a photo influence. I say this because there is a great amount of detail to shadow and texture, which I believe that a lot of photographers focus on.

Nik Ainley

He is a digital illustrator based in the UK. He has been producing personal and commissioned illustrations for a wide array of clients for over ten years. He is a self taught artist while studying physics in college. He works in both 2d and 3d softwear programs. Most of his works are a combination of the 2d and 3d, he doesn't use one over the other.

I chose the above image because of the fatasy quality. To me this looks a lot like my favorite artist, Josephine Wall (see april post). I am really infatuated by the dream like quality. This image was not done for a client but was done for his own personal collection. Makes me wonder if this image is a creation of a world that he wants to visit.

Burak Kaynak is a multi-disciplinary designer who is working in 3 different cities; Amsterdam, Istanbul and Toronto. He holds a Bachelor of Advertising degree from Canada, and a Bachelor of Design degree from Turkey. "Everyone has a great idea for a t-shirt, and sketching is an excellent way to quickly explore concepts. T-Shirt Shape Sketchbook invites you to start with sketching by hand."

I enjoyed going through his work, though his work is not done all digitaly, I think that it fits in nicely. He takes aspects of online sites and makes them into real things. I chose the t-shirt one because it use to be that you would design the shirt by hand and now you do it all online through a company. I thought it was funny that he made a notebook in the shape so that you can bring back some more creativity to your designs.

AKA-Suzko is a 25-year-old artist specializing in portraiture and figurative work. Suzko takes her inspiration from the city, urban life and street art. She usually works from photographs because “it’s easy to do a straight copy of a photograph, but the fun for me is finding that unique quality in each individual and being able to portray that [in my work].” For the last year she has been experimenting with a new style; using Posca pens on canvas primarily used by graffiti artists, which creates a poster / pop-art feel, in bright fluro colors. The above image was done based on a photograph of her grandfather holding her as a baby. She says works are more powerful when you have an emotional connection to the subject.

I personally like to work more from photographs when I do work, specially when it is an image that I have taken. I think that her personal connection to her work helps her to make a stronger image because she is already invested or tied to the subjects. Though her work is not done graphicly I think that it is something that you could most deffinitatly make on the computer, kinda a different take on the paint by numbers.
